Reading To Gatwick taxi best services and London travel points of interest? The mistake made by most visitors to the United Kingdom — many British citizens too, actually — is to see it as one entity. Politically that’s true. But the Act of Union in 1707 masks that this is four distinct nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each has its own character and frequently its own vocabulary. For outsiders that’s a holiday jackpot; it’s four countries for the price of one, each rich in heritage and gorgeous scenery in 15 national parks. England has the wonky medieval towns and stately homes among soft hills shown in films. Wales lives up to fantasies of green valleys and rugby singalongs, and its national pride and language is in rude health. Scotland, too, becomes more Scottish by the year. You’ll come for whisky and Highlands romance and you’ll discover a nation with the community spirit of the best parts of Scandinavia; no wonder, since some parts of Scotland are closer to Norway than to London. Northern Ireland is different again, a complex stew of Irish and British.
A beacon of London’s enduring spirit, famously standing strong during the Blitz, Sir Christopher Wren’s domed structure replaced the original Gothic cathedral that was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Inside, 259 steps take visitors to the Whispering Gallery within the dome’s interior while the Golden Gallery on the outside offers sensational city views. Deep inside the cathedral’s crypt is the resting place of Wren himself. Stretching across the River Severn in Shropshire, this was the first iron bridge in the world, giving the name to the town that grew around it. The 100-foot (30m) structure was built by Abraham Darby III, based on a design by local architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard. It opened in 1781 but was closed for crossing in 1934 until the restoration of the bridge was completed in 2019.
You really don’t want to find yourself in a hurry to catch your flight at Heathrow Airport. Don’t assume that because you’ve already got your boarding pass printed off and you’re only traveling with hand luggage you don’t need to arrive early. That may be the appropriate approach for smaller airports, it’s not for Heathrow. You need to consider the traffic on the roads and delays on public transport. According to Heathrow Airport’s website, if you’re traveling on a long-haul flight, you need to allow at least 3 hours before your departure. Whereas, if you’re flying on a domestic or European flight, you’ll need a minimum of 2 hours before your scheduled departure. You may not be able to breeze through security as in other airports. You need to allow for delays and disruptions along the way. Lastly, if you’re departing from terminal 5, remember the terminal is divided into 3 separate buildings. After security, you need to make your way to either 5A, 5B or 5C.
A good old-fashioned caff. Since 1900 this workers’ café has provided carbs and protein in eggy, meaty and pan-fried form to the good people of east London. Traces of bygone eras, like art deco interior details and Formica tables have earned E Pellicci Grade II-listed status, but what diners love best is that the fry-ups, grills and Italian plates are still all dished up by the same family. As strange as it might sound, you’re going to want to chase down your fry-up with a helping of bread-and-butter pudding – it’s a customer favourite. Venue says We now offer call & collect, delivery and takeaway with Just Eat. Plus, feed the family with our Pellicci Family Favourite Fridge Fillers.
The magnificent York Minster is second in importance in the Church of England only to the cathedral at Canterbury. It stands in the center of historic York, surrounded by half-timbered homes and shops, medieval guildhalls, and churches. In turn, York’s romantic streets are surrounded by three miles of magnificent town walls that you can walk atop for spectacular views over the city and its surroundings. While here, visit the National Railway Museum, one of England’s most visited tourist attractions. York is also a good base from which to explore northeast England, in particular the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors. Elsewhere in this corner of the country, you’ll find some of England’s most beautiful historic towns and cities, including Durham – famous for its castle and cathedral – and Beverley, which also boasts an attractive minster. First up, there’s the largest Royal Park in London — Richmond Park. This park is located a fair way southwest of the city and makes a great day trip from London, especially if the weather is pleasant. This space is world-famous for being home to 600 wild deer. Keep an eye out for these majestic creatures, though don’t get too close — especially over summer — when mother deer will fiercely protect their young. Richmond Park also has a wonderful view of St Paul’s Cathedral from a vantage point on the western side of the park. It’s so big you could walk for miles within the park’s many walking trails. Being so large, Richmond Park can be accessed from several train stations — it’s about a 20-minute walk from Richmond tube station (District line and London Overground). You can also take a Richmond train from Waterloo station and get off at Norbiton and then a 15-minute walk from the south edge of the park. Richmond Park is open from 7 a.m. in summer and 7:30 a.m. in winter, closing at dusk each day.

If time permits or if you check in extra early, consider dining at the airport restaurants instead of having to put up with a doubtful plane meal. Airport restaurants are improving. It is also more cost effective and can help with jet lag. Just think, you can have a comfortable seat and plenty of elbow room for cutting your steak! If you are not in a first class lounge, it might be difficult to find a quiet spot. However, look for a religious symbol and follow that. Airport chapels of various denominations are usually provided. They are almost always very quiet. You can sleep or meditate there. Airports in the Middle East tend to have public shower facilities near the chapels or prayer rooms. Frankfurt airport has several chapels catering to Jewish, Christian and Muslim travelers. I recommend pre-booking your train tickets though as it’s much cheaper and the queue to collect tickets is normally much shorter than to buy new tickets. Usually I can get a direct train to London Bridge or Blackfriars for £10-12 depending on the day. There’s also a bus station (about a ten minute walk from the South Terminal via tunnels/hallways) that connects you with pretty much the entire country. The North Terminal is only a short (free) tram ride away the South Terminal. There’s also plenty of parking if you’re planning on driving and it’s much cheaper than Heathrow.
